Several persons were killed , many more injured and properties destroyed in an allegedly renewed ethno-religious violence in the Wukari town of Taraba state.

A resident of the town, Lawal Sambo, who now takes refuge inside the bush with his household, said trouble started after Jukun and Hausa youth clashed at Sabon Gari, Kantana wards and also around the market area of the town.

Another resident, Suleiman Adam, said no one is sure of the reason for today’s attack.

He however said an Hausa youth, who operates a GSM call centre at Sabon Gari, had a misunderstanding with a Jukun youth on Saturday and his shop was razed last night.

“But that incident was not serious and everything seemed to have been settled,” he said.

The violence is now said to have spread to Rafinkada, a nearby town and is moving towards Ibi, Premium Times reported.

Some of the fighters are believed to be dressed in military uniform.

The spokesperson of the Police command in Taraba, Joseph Kwaji confirmed the incident, but offered no details.
