World Gambia: ECOWAS Extends Deadline for Yahaya Jammeh to Step Down

The deadline given to Yahaya Jammeh to step down as Gambia's President by ECOWAS or risk full military invasion has passed.

The West African bloc has however extended the deadline pending the outcome of last-minute mediation talks between Jammeh and the Presidents of Mauritania and Guinea.

Regional West African forces will wait for talks between Yahya Jammeh and the Mauritanian and Guinean presidents to take place before resuming their military operation.

The two presidents are expected to persuade Yahya Jammeh to leave the country with them and seek asylum. If he refuses the regional force will step in.
