Business General Electric To Provide 3000 Jobs At Its Calabar Facility

Manufacturing giant, General Electric (GE) has said its new facility in Calabar, Cross Rivers State will provide over 3000 jobs when completed. This was made known to journalists last week by Uzo Nwagwu, Chief Operating Officer Oil & Gas (West Africa) during a facility tour of GE's Onne facility.

He said GE's expanding footprints across Nigeria and the jobs they continue to create are in alignment with the Federal Government's local content policy.

Nwagwu said the Onne facility, which became fully operational in 2013, functions primarily as a repair and maintenance hub and is only one of the three such GE facilities across the world with others in Brazil and Scotland.

He added that GE will manufacture brand new equipment at its Calabar facility which is expected to provide 259 direct jobs and another 2.500 indirect jobs.

“We are investing over $1bn dollars in our Calabar facility over 5 years and we have already trained 15 Nigerian engineers who will be at the vanguard at the cost of about $3.6 mn. Our plans to localise operations and create long-term job opportunities for Nigerians remain unwavering,” He said.

The Calabar manufacturing plant will also include a training centre fro technical and leadership development.
