Giroud bagged his first ever hatrick for the North London side against Olympiacos to help the injury ridden Arsenal make it through to the round of 16.

Mathieu Flamini had already hit the bar before Giroud opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a near-post header from Aaron Ramsey's cross, which went in off the goalkeeper Roberto.

His second, which came in the 49th minute was the best goal of the night as Giroud won a flick-on on the halfway line and timed his run into the box to perfection before stroking home.

The third was slightly more fortuitous as Omar Elabdellaoui was penalised for handling Nacho Monreal's shot and Giroud stepped up to convert with ease.

Chelsea also joined Arsenal and Manchester City in the knock out stage with an emphatic 2-0 win over FC Porto at the Bridge.

Coming back from a 1-0 defeat in the hands of Bournemouth in the EPL, Diego Costa and Willian extended Jose Mourinho's job lifeline with their respective goal, leaving Manchester United as the only English team that dropped to Europa League after UCL's first round.

The Jose Mourinho will at least avoid the red hot teams at this point after finishing at the top of the group, as they await knock out stage draws on Friday.
