There are mixed feelings in Zamfara state and an air of uncertainty over the demolishing of a corper's lodge by government authorities.

The Zamfara Urban and Rural Planning Board on Tuesday visited the premises of the Nigeria Christian Corpers’ Fellowship in the state and demolished a building of the fellowship that was under construction.

The officials, who were in company with armed policemen and operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, came with a bulldozer, which broke down the fence of the lodge before pulling down the building.

Indigenes of the area (some who jubilate to the demolition) had been against construction of the building, saying the fellowship wants to build a church extension.

The Zamfara Urban and Rural Planning Board had said that only residential structures were allowed on the premises.

The NCCF had said they wanted to convert the structure into a multipurpose facility to accommodate more corps members, and later suspended the construction of the building.

The Zamfara State Coordinator of the NYSC, Mr. B.B Ballama described the demolition as sad and unfortunate.

He urged the corps members residing in the lodge to remain calm, and denied knowledge of the demolition. He also called on the corpers not to carry damaging rumors about, especially as some say some corpers were attacked during the incident.

He said the state remains safe for corpers.
