A human rights group, Campaign for Democracy, CD has called on the federal government to declare a state of emergency on all the federal roads in the South East geo-political zone.

CD therefore gave the Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Fashiola (SAN) seven days to visit all the federal roads in the South East zone to see for himself how deplorable they are, to justify the state of emergency to be declared on them.
In a press statement issued to newsmen yesterday and jointly signed by its President, Ifeanyi Odili; its executive officer, Abdullahi Jabi and its National Publicity Secretary, Dede Uzor .A. Uzor, CD listed the federal road as:

Nnewi/Uga/Akokwa/Ideato connecting Orlu via Owerri highway, Nnewi/Amichi/Ekwulumili/Unubi/Uga/Akokwa/Arondizuogu/Umulolo/Okigwe highway,

Enugu/Okigwe/Umuahia/Aba/Port Harcourt highway,

Enugu/Abakaliki/Afikpo highway, among others.

According to the statement, “It is in South East that the worst deplorable state of roads are found which are as comparable as that of Somalia and South Sudan where the people witnessed over 30-year old war, adding, the state of emergency is imperative in order for the federal government to take a holistic approach to avert the continued loss of lives and properties in the zone”.
