The Federal Government plan to establish cattle colonies around the country in order to settle down nomadic herdsmen and also reduce the frequent clashes between farmers and herders have met open resistance from some state governors.
Although, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Chief Audu Ogbeh said sixtheen governors have offered five hectares of land each for the project but did not disclose the states.
Among the strategies to be adopted, he said, is a drive for improved breeding through artificial insemination.
Here are 7 state (governors) that have openly rejected the proposed plan by the Federal Government to establish cattle colonies in all the states of the federation.
1. Taraba - Yusufu Akirikwen, the Taraba Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice says that the state has no land for cattle colonies as proposed by the Federal Government.
2. Ekiti - Fayose, who spoke through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said, Ekiti will not surrender its land for any cattle colonies.
3. Benue - Governor Samuel Ortom and prominent leaders from Benue State said there is no land to allow for the establishment of cattle colonies as being proposed by the Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh.
4. Abia - Governor of Abia State Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu said his state has limited land and that it would be unfair to his farmers to allocate land for “alien occupation
5. Anambra - Though not openly but the MASSOB - group- has commended the government for rejecting the policy
6. Ebonyi - Governor David Umahi, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Emmanuel Uzor, said, “The proposed cattle colony is strange to the state government because it is a deceptive arrangement to dispossess us of our precious lands.”
7. Imo - the leadership of the Imo State House of Assembly has also said there is no law or bill before it seeking the release of lands for cattle colony, stressing that nobody can take over any place for the use of herdsmen in the state.
