The hijacker of an Ethiopian Airlines flight has been identified as the co-pilot and has surrendered to police, Geneva airport authorities said on Monday.
The airport officials said the 31-year-old Ethiopian locked himself in the cockpit after taking control of the Boeing 767-300 and he wanted to seek asylum in Switzerland.
Geneva Cantonal Police Spokesperson, Jean-Philippe Bramdt, told Chinese News Agency (Xinhua) that investigations had started and further details would be released soon.
Flight ET-702 from Addis Abba to Milan via Rome was forced to land at Geneva International Airport at 6 a.m. on Monday after reportedly being hijacked while flying over Sudan.
However, the police arrived at the airport and controlled the situation on the ground.
Bramdt said the passengers and crew were safe and that police were evacuating them.
Meanwhile, Geneva airport is currently closed, with many flights cancelled
