The National Agency for the Control of AIDS , NACA has disclosed that deaths associated with HIV and AIDS was due to stigmatization against persons living with the virus in their community.

Director-General of NACA, Prof. John Idoko, made the disclosure in Abuja at the Nigerian Academy of Science public lecture and induction of fellows of the academy.

He said, "The reason while people are dying is because of stigma, I encourage all communities to welcome with love, open arms and support people living with HIV. There is no reason while people should die of the virus because government has created more awareness on HIV".

He also called on the government to address gender inequality as one of the means of tackling HIV and AIDS. Prof. Idoko further blamed HIV, AIDS deaths on late diagnosis while expressing hope that the virus will one day be eradicated.
