The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given the 18 political parties participating in the gubernatorial election in Ekiti till June 5 to submit names of their polling agents.

The commission’s Deputy-Director, Gender Division, Mrs Blessing Obidiegwu, gave the directive in Ado-Ekiti at a one-day political dialogue organised by a consortium of women bodies in conjunction with the UNDP and INEC.

She also directed the parties to be prepared for the June 21 poll as INEC had no plan to shift the date for whatever reason.

Obidiegwu said the official register of voters for the election will be published on May 20, adding that INEC would do everything possible to ensure a free and fair election in the state.

She also said that the commission would soon unveil a “Gender Policy” that would make its work more gender-responsive.

Obidiegwu allayed the womenfolk’s fears on the issue of security and threats of violence, saying adequate security arrangements had been made to ensure the safety of voters and personnel.

Earlier, Mrs Bisi Olateru-Olagbegi, the Executive Director of Women Consortium of Nigeria (WOCON), said the group was committed to the promotion of the rights of women in democratic process.

She said WOCON organised the awareness seminar in conjunction with INEC and the UNDP to sensitize women to electioneering process.
