Attacks on Wednesday in northern and central Iraq killed 22 people and injured 25, Alsumaria television reported online.

Eight people were killed and four injured when a suicide bomber in an explosive-laden vehicle blew himself up at a police checkpoint near Tikrit, 180 km north of the capital Baghdad, the broadcaster said.

In Baqouba, 57km north of Baghdad, three bombs hit a Shiite religious procession, killing five and injuring 10, Alsumaria reported citing Shiite religious authorities.

Four people were killed and 11 injured when two bombs went off at the house of a police officer in al-Karma, west of Baghdad.

Another five gunmen were killed when forces returned fire on them after coming under attack in Nineveh in the north, the broadcaster said.

According to UN estimates, 979 people were killed in Iraq in October.

This year has seen mounting death tolls amid sectarian tensions and violent campaigns by the al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant and by gunmen linked to the former ruling Baath Party.
