The majority of Italians on Monday suffered a massive heartbreak as they failed to qualify for the world cup for the first time in almost 6 decades.

This happened after they played a goalless draw against Sweden in San Siro. On aggregate, they lost as Sweden beat them 1-0 in the first leg of the Russia 2018 world cup play-offs. The Italians had come second in their group after failing to beat Spain.

This is the first time the four-time champions will fail to reach the World Cup since 1958.

Italian skipper and World Cup winner Gianlugi Buffon, who was also tearful at the final whistle, said: "I am not sorry for myself but all of Italian football. We failed at something which also means something on a social level."
