Providing adequate incentives to members of local vigilante groups in communities under constant attack, could make the difference in the fight against insurgents, an aspirant for senatorial seat, Chief Danjuma La’ah, has said.

La’ah, aspiring for the Kaduna South Senatorial seat, told newsmen in Jos on Sunday that the vigilante groups had the advantage of being conversant with their terrain, as such if supported, could detect bad eggs in the society.

"We seem to expect so much from the local vigilante groups because they know the terrains of their communities, but no one is talking about giving them the incentives to help the society. It is not possible for soldiers to enter everywhere, but the local vigilante groups can do that; we must think of their welfare, respect them and treat them well, because they are always our first line of defense,’’ he said.

The aspirant said that the vigilante men should not be armed with sophisticated weapons, adding that extending such weapons to them could be risky.

Instead, he suggested that they should be allowed to operate with their local weapons, such as bows and arrows.

"The modern bow and arrow has remained crucial to protecting the local communities because the arrows are usually poisoned to neutralize any charm by attackers and unknown gunmen,’’ he said.

On his intention to join the senatorial race,, La’ah said that he was being dragged into it by his people, who were insisting that he had something to offer.
