Some residents of Kano state have taken to the streets to protest the announcement of Nigeria's former Central Bank Governor, Lamido Sanusi Lamido as the new Emir of Kano.

The protest started at the Kofar Kudu area, near the Emir’s palace, shortly after the Kano State Government announced Sanusi as the successor to late Alhaji Ado Bayero. Residents of the neighbouring streets trooped out to the palace area in opposition to the choice.

The angry mob set tyres on fire and mounted road blocks as they shouted, "Ba muso, ba muso’’, meaning, "we don’t want, we don’t want" in apparent reference to the choice of Sanusi by the state government.

The mob threw stones at passing vehicles, a situation which was brought under control with the quick arrival of a detachment of policemen, civil defence personnel and the state Hisbah.

There is nothing wrong in protests if people conduct themselves in a civilised manner. A situation in which innocent, unsuspecting people are harassed must not br tolerated.

It is done. Nothing will change it. I only hope this was not done for short term political gains.

The Emir of Kano is first and foremost a religious leader. From what I know, Mallam Sanusi has the knowledge for that role. So congratulations to him.

But he should not associate with members of only one party. That would not be appropriate. If he does that then it diminishes the Emirate.

We should all remember that he is the Emir of Kano and not Nigeria. The significance of his issues with the current Government is over played.

The late Emir's first son IMO is a better choice for the position. The ex-CBN gov has too much history and has stepped on some big toes.

Gideon Akaluka ......will never rest in peace. As for the protests, that same section of Kano protested when the last Emir emerged, they even threw stones and dirt at him.
