West Brom broke their transfer record this, signing Ideye for as much as £10million from Ukrainian side,Dynamo Kiev.
Ideye said that when the opportunity came to join West Brom the first thing he did was to call Kanu, who played for two seasons at the Hawthorns from 2004 to 2006.
Ideye told the club's official website: "I spoke with Kanu, once or twice in a week. He's a great guy. He told me to be myself and try to do my best on the pitch, to score goals so that hopefully the fans and the club would be behind me.
"He just told me to give my best in every game and try to get my head down and listen to what the manager has to say and also what my fellow players are telling me."
The 25-year-old made his debut for Alan Irvine's side in their 0-0 draw with Southampton on Saturday, and came close to scoring a goal.
