Gabor Presser, a prominent Hungarian rock singer and composer, has accused Kanye West of sampling one of his best-known compositions without permission for the 2013 song "New Slaves."
BBC reports that Presser claims one-third of New Slaves, from West's album Yeezus, is an unauthorised copy of the 1969 song Gyongyhaju Lany. He is seeking at least $2.5 million in damages for copyright infringement.
Presser said he had no inkling his song was being used until West's lawyer emailed him soon after marketing began, indicating that West "would like to work out a deal with you as soon as possible" and giving him 24 hours to respond. West's lawyers later sent Presser a $10,000 check and insisted that he grant a license. But Presser never cashed the check, the complaint said.
