Kogi Youths for Good Governance, yesterday stormed the National Assembly, demanding for the immediate suspension of Senator Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West Senatorial Zone.

His suspension, the protesters believed, would facilitate Melaye’s recall.

The leader of the protesters, Leke Richard, said that the processes of recalling Melaye have started in his zone, over what he termed as the “abuse of Tinubu’s wife in the Senate.”

‎The protesters, who besieged the National Assembly’s gate in the early hours of yesterday, carried placards and banners with different inscriptions, such as: ‎”Dino Melaye is a disgrace to us,” “Dino Melaye will be recalled” and “Women are our mothers, learn to respect them.”

‎An officer from the office of the Sargent-At-Arms at the National Assembly, Dennis Maji, who received a letter from the protesters, promised to deliver it to the appropriate quarters.

Can we have an article on how to recall our representatives from the National Assembly and share it! Might also be useful to have details of the job description of these privilege men and women with more cash than sense at this difficult times.

The power to recall any erring members the legislature, Federal or States resides in the electorates.
[Nigerian Constitution: Sections 69 and 110 ].

The process of recall is in two stages:
I. The electorates from the senatorial district (senator) of the erring lawmaker must write to INEC that they are passing a vote of no confidence on him or her. The vote of no confidence is a signed list of over an half of voters in that same district.

II. Upon the receipt of the petition, the INEC chairman shall order the conduct a referendum in that district or constituency within 90 days from the day he received the petition. A referendum will be successfully if passed if simple majority voted in its favour and the lawmaker loses his or her seat in the assembly.

With this procedure the gap created by the electorates ignorance - voting imprudent character can be bridged.

For the job of these honourable men!
To carry out oversight functions on miniseries and Departments run by the executives.
To approve budget.
To approve appointments of ministers.
To make laws for the good governance of Nigeria.

But what we see lawmakers do is that they come back from one recess, fight over money or 'juicy posts' and go back on another recess. The vicious cycle goes on and on till a four tenure is over.
