The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has donated a modern integrated rice milling facility to Nigeria.
The facility, worth $1.6m is located in Bida, Niger State. Construction work started in 2008.
The plant has the capacity of processing 1.5 tonnes of rice per hour (1.5t/h) with parboiling, drying, sorting and packaging facilities, which can be increased to 3.0t/h.
The handover ceremony took place on the 8th of December, 2016.
An estimated N356 billion is spent on rice importation in Nigeria yearly, making the country rank among the top 12 rice consuming countries in the world.
It is anticipated that the facility will not only assist the local rice farmer and millers in Bida, and boost creation of jobs for thousands of unemployed youths, but will also contribute towards assisting Nigeria become self-sufficient in rice production. Furthermore, it will bring an end to the importation of rice from other rice-producing countries.
