The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) on Wednesday sealed off Emergency Response Services Nigeria Ltd, for refusing to remit to it over N1.3m income tax.

The enforcement team arrived the premises of the hospital at 41, Bishop Oluwole Street, Victoria Island around 4.p.m. and sealed it.

Mrs Folasade Coker-Afolayan, the Head, Enforcement Unit of LIRS, told newsmen that the company defaulted in the remittance of the Personal Income Taxes of its workers.

Coker-Afolayan said that the unit decided to seal the company because it owed the Lagos State Government N1.3 million, which was the workers’ income tax between 2008 and 2010.

"The company will not be reopened for business until the tax liability is remitted,” she said.

Coker-Afolayan said that the state government had written the management of the company on the need to remit the tax.

She said the Distrain Unit of the LIRS had no alternative than to seal up the company when the management failed to respond to its request.

"Tax payment is a civic responsibility of everyone because it enables government to provide adequate infrastructure for the people,” she said. Coker-Afolayan warned that the seal on the company should not be removed by anybody, except officials of LIRS.

She warned that it was a criminal offence to assault members of the team while on official duty.

An official of Emergency Response Services who pleaded anonymity, said that it was wrong for government officials to seal up the company when top management officials were not around.

He also frowned at the manner the state government was going about the enforcement of its tax laws.
