The Democratic Alliance (DA) has officially revoked Patricia de Lille’s party membership. The DA’s federal executive, the party’s highest decision-making body, made the announcement earlier on Tuesday morning. De Lille must now either resign as Cape Town mayor or take the matter to the courts.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has formally revoked Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille’s party membership. The DA’s federal executive (fedex), the party’s highest decision-making body, made the announcement earlier on Tuesday morning.
During the announcement, the fedex briefly outlined the history of what has become a very public falling out between the DA’s national leadership and de Lille.

De Lille has been accused of a variety of wrongdoings by the DA including misconduct and bringing the party into disrepute.
Briefly.co.za gathered that according to Natasha Mazzone DA members are forbidden by the party’s constitution to publicly express their intent to resign.
Mazzone spoke on the radio a short while ago: “The DA constitution provides that a member ceases to be a member when he or she publicly declares his or her intention to resign and or publicly declares his or her resignation from the party. Now it’s ironic that I talk to you, as it was on your show that Mayor De Lille indicated and made known her intention to resign from the Democratic Alliance."
De Lille seemed to seal her own fate, when after weeks of drama and public spats between her and the DA, de Lille told a local radio show host that she was going to resign from the DA because the writing was on the wall.
This public utterance was taken literally by the DA’s leadership who announced de Lille’s membership had been revoked as of 26 April 2018.
Fedex chairperson James Selfe said the fact that de Lille was no longer a member of the DA rendered all pending disciplinary action against her moot. De Lille will now have to resign as Cape Town mayor or take the entire matter to the courts.
The DA has acknowledged and apologised to the people of Cape Town for the damage the entire matter has caused.
De Lille will release her public statement on the matter during the course of the day.
