The National Chairman, National Conscience Party (NCP), Dr Yunusa Tanko, said Nigerian youths should be allowed to chart a new course for the country.

He made the call on Friday in Abuja during an interview session.

Tanko, who decried the situation where elderstatesmen were still in the corridors of power, called for youths to be given the opportunity to govern the country.

"The elder statesmen have passed their prime, they have not added value to Nigeria’s development. We have witnessed their intrigues which we believe are for selfish gains rather than for the collective interest of Nigerians,” he said.

Tanko, who faulted the old leaders for not giving room to the younger generation to advance the course of the nation said such leaders were being recycled every now and then.

"How could the elder statesmen decide on the future of the young people when they are not speaking and talking like the younger generation with regards to modernisation. We urge government to check this trend to ensure that the productive generation is in power, ‘’ Tanko explained.

He also called on the elder statesmen to leave the stage and allow the younger generation to rule.

He said that he was optimistic that the younger generation who were more digital in thinking could bring more useful to the society.

According to Tanko, we need a group of people who are active in their thinking to take over the governance of the nation. He said when the youth were made to be part of governance, social vices like kidnappings, violence and armed robbery among others would be tackled.

The NCP boss, however, said that the efforts of the statesmen in time past were appreciated but now was the time for the younger generation to chart a new course for Nigeria.
