Africa- In a bid to tackle an influx of refugees and Islamist militants into its cities and towns, Libya has deported more than 500 African immigrants, says LANA, its state news agency.
Lana reported that Libyan authorities deported 350 illegal immigrants to Niger and 208 to Chad via its remote al-Tum crossing, quoting a security official.
It said a total of 4,875 illegal immigrants of various nationalities were being held in detention centres in Libya.
It added that hundreds of illegal migrants have died in the past two months on their way from North Africa to Italy but that many set off in small boats from the Libyan coast which authorities struggle to monitor.
