The death of Alhaji Ado Bayero, the Emir of Kano, invokes the words of former American president, George W. Bush, jnr., on the death of another former American president, Ronald Reagan. And interestingly, Thursday June 5, 2014 marked the tenth anniversary of the death of Reagan. Perhaps, if Bayero had died a day earlier, it would have been exactly ten years between his death and that of Reagan. Bush had said upon Reagan’s death:

“In the end, through his belief in our country and his love for our country, he became an enduring symbol of our country. We think of his steady stride, that tilt of a head and snap of a salute, the big-screen smile, and the glint in his Irish eyes when a story came to mind.”

In Bayero, the nation has lost a leader. He was not a head of state like Reagan, but in a cultural society like Kano, where the monarchy is both revered and feared, the words of Bush might have applied to Bayero as he joined his ancestors on Thursday June 6. He believed in the country and its indivisibility.
