A lion has mauled to death a keeper at a zoo in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, after he forgot to close the door to the inner cage where the animal sleeps, officials say.

The lion, named Kenenisa after the famous Ethiopian athlete Kenenisa Bekele, bit Abera Silsay, 51, in the neck, they said.

The attack is said to have lasted for 15-20 minutes.

According to news24, the lion bit Abera's neck as guards tried to scare Kenenisa off by shooting live rounds into the air and pounding on the cage's roof.

It is the second time a zookeeper has been killed by a lion at the centre in the past 17 years.

Kenenisa the lion was unharmed and remains in the zoo, which was closed on Monday after the incident.

The Addis Ababa zoo is home to 15 endangered Abyssinian Lions, found in Ethiopia and famous for their black manes.

His negligence has cost him his life.

What a horrific way to die. Watching his fellow zookeepers shoot aimlessly into the sky and the repeated shaking of the cage in desperation to distract the raging king.

Watching as hope slowly fades with every additional weight of the king laid on his tired body. Thinking to himself, "how could I have been so careless"

Looking at his mates wasting bullets one last time, voices out through his ruptured wind pipe "You should have just f**king shot the king. You valued his life to mine..."

Poor an...the zoo could afford to lose a zookeeper but definitely not a rare lion.
