Senator Oluremi Tinubu has recently been in the news because of her clash with Senator Dino Melaye, a Kogi-born lawmaker. The fight has gone wild as Senator Oluremi is a senior lawmaker and also the wife of one of Nigeria's most influential politicians, Bola Tinubu.
Some women groups have risen to her defense, while several others are ignoring the drama. There has been calls by several women groups for more women to speak up in support of Senator Tinubu. Here are 5 reasons why more women shouldn't join the fight :
1. Ese Oruru case
Senator Tinubu is chairman Senate Committee on Women Affairs but she has been silent over the case of abducted Bayelsa teenager who was abducted and raped into motherhood. Shouldn't Senator Tinubu be championing the case for the prosecution of all those involved ?
2. Gender Equality bill
In April, the Nigerian Senate rejected the proposed gender equality bill. The senators argued that the bill will give women “too much freedom” to engage in “social vices” including “lesbianism” and “prostitution”. Female Senators like Tinubu were conspicuously missing during the hearing of the bill.
3. Murder of Nigerian women by religious fanatics
This year, two Nigerian women - Mrs. Bridget Agbaheme and Mrs. Eunice Elisha were murdered by Religious fanatics in Kano state and Abuja respectively. Although the case does not directly fall under her jurisdiction, shouldn't the gender of the victims cause Senator Oluremi Tinubu to speak up ?
4. Plight of Nigerian women in IDP camps
Everyday Nigerian women are losing their children in IDP camps to hunger and sickness. As chairman Senate Committee on Women Affairs, Tinubu is yet to comment on the crisis. She's yet to visit a single IDP camp.
5. Her husband can fight her battle
Bola Tinubu removed an incumbent President, he can squash Senator Melaye if need be. Senator Tinubu needs a seasoned fighter if she must win this battle against Senator Melaye . Who wages a more successful warfare than Bola Tinubu ?

Other than the wrappers and food items distributed during elections, Tinubu has done nothing for Nigerian women. She most certainly does not deserve their support.
