Zimbabwe's former vice President, Emmerson Mnangagwa to be sworn in as president on Friday, the state broadcaster said on Wednesday.

Mnangagwa is due to return to the southern African nation Wednesday to replace Robert Mugabe, whose resignation as president ended his 37-year rule.

Mnangagwa, 75, will be sworn in as interim leader, Simon Kaya Moyo, the spokesman for the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front, has said.

Mnangagwa fled the country, citing “incessant threats” against him and his family, following his dismissal by Mugabe as vice president on Nov. 6 after the president’s wife Grace Mugabe accused him of planning a coup.

Not sure why the VP is being celebrated. Zimbabweans should take the opportunity to demand swift changes including a date for an election. From what I have heard their judiciary is pretty fair so they should be able to work with this momentum and decide if they can get rid of mugabe's party.

Don't forget the party under the VP now has the backing of the army.
