Egypt's first freely elected president faced the death penalty in a politically freighted trial that began on Tuesday in which he is accused of colluding with foreign powers in a prison escape.
The judiciary charged the deposed Muslim Brotherhood-backed President Mohammed Morsi with espionage, killing prison guards and illegally fleeing jail in connection with his 2011 escapealong with dozens of other prisonerswith the alleged help of Palestinian and Lebanese militias, according to Egypt's state-run media.
