Apparently, MTN Nigeria is currently the biggest loser in the mobile number porting game, as we see a staggering 49% of its subscribers jump ship with the advent of the new Mobile Number Portability (MNP) initiative.

Now that porting is an option with phone users, any one of the 114 million active mobile users in Nigeria can switch network provider on a whim, and still retain the phone number they start out with. This scheme was launched this year (2013), April.

MTN Nigeria, as will be recalled, jumped in the foray with their hilarious Saka advert: “I don port oh!”, but right now, it appears like MTN may have celebrated too early.

Etisalat appears to be favored by the telecommunications gods, recording a subscriber increase of 44% in only the first month of the MNP activity.

Counting losses, MTN is the first (and the biggest) loser, with a loss of 49%, Globacom comes second (with a loss of 23%), Airtel is third (17%) and finally Etisalat with 11% losses in the first month. Data supplied by the telecoms umpire.
