The Federal Airport Authorities of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken a final step to retrieve its outstanding debts from airline operators, concessionaires and contractors. The debts which are to the tune of N18bn are to be paid to FAAN by defaulters on or before August 24, 2015.

Yakubu Dati, FAAN's spokesman said, the authority had in February this year threatened to publish a list of it debtors in major Nigerian newspapers before taking other drastic measures to recover all its outstanding debts.

He said, if unchecked, the level of indebtedness might have a negative impact on its service as FAAN is self sustaining and cannot meet its responsiilibities considering the huge debts. This should be avoided for the interest of safety and security at the airports.

The Authority observed that most of its customers deliberately refuse to pay their charges/fees long after FAAN has rendered them statutory services. It said FAAN would be compelled in pursuant to a presidential directive to take measures to recover the debt.
