In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Public Secretary, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) has identified the National Assembly as the institution well placed to take the necessary measures to reduce cost of governance.

The statement said that Nigeria's democracy was increasingly too expensive for the nation's economy to cope with and called on the National Assembly to initiate laws that would reduce the costs of governance at all levels in order to make resources available for the basic needs of ordinary Nigerians.

The CNPP also expressed fears that the proposed national dialogue might end up being an exercise in futility as ethnic jingoists could predominate at the conference and warned the 13-member Committee headed by Dr Femi Ikurounmu not see its assignment as a mere jamboree like its predecessors.
