The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Legal Defence and Assistance Project (LEDAP), a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) on Tuesday called for speedy disposal of high profile corruption cases, especially those involving former state governors.

According to the Chairman of the NBA, Ikeja branch, Mr Onyekachi Ubani, “all corruption cases involving some former governors that have been lingering since 2007 should be handled with dispatch in 2014.”

"They should be handled with so much dispatch so that those who are innocent will go home while the guilty should be jailed," Ubani said.

He urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to remain diligent in prosecuting the cases.

The National Coordinator of LEDAP, Mr Chino Obiagwu, appealed to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloma Mukhtar, to direct facilitated trial of the cases.

According to him, the directive will ensure day-to- day trial of the cases, which will accelerate their conclusion.

Obiagwu said: “That is what is being used in terrorism cases. As you can see, most of them are concluded in time.

"In 2014, the CJN should issue the directive to all judges handling high profile corruption cases in order to restore public confidence in the judiciary”.
