The Nigeria Union of Teachers, Lagos State Chapter, on Friday urged the state government to recruit and train teachers for effective implementation of the newly introduced senior secondary school curriculum.

The Chairman of the chapter, Mr Segun Raheem, told newsmen in Lagos that implementation of the new curriculum was a challenge to both teachers and students.

The state Commissioner for Education, Mrs Olayinka Oladunjoye, on Nov. 12 said that a new curriculum had been approved for senior secondary schools in the state.

In the curriculum, students are expected to take nine subjects which include five compulsory core subjects made up of English, Mathematics, Civic Education, Biology and one trade subject.

The trade subjects are Catering Craft Practice, Garment Making, Dyeing and Bleaching, Data Processing, Store Keeping, Book Keeping, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Marketing and Salesmanship.

“Teachers are being compelled to read textbooks on the new subjects without background knowledge on the subjects.” Said Raheem.

“If the government wants to make it successful, it must recruit new teachers and train existing ones to teach the new subjects.

“Most schools have inadequate number of teachers, yet the government wants them to use the same teachers to teach the new subjects without training.”

The Vice Principal, Optimum International School, Ikola-Ipaja, Lagos, Mr Theophilus Oni, also agreed that change of curriculum was always accompanied with some challenges.

Oni said that some schools had not implemented the curriculum because their teachers could teach the new subjects.

“Only few approved private schools have started implementing the curriculum because they need to recruit more teachers; many proprietors cannot afford it,” he said.
