Nigeria - According to Dr. Joseph Dawha, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), the next 50 years of operation in the petroleum sector would be dominated by gas resources, Daily Independent reports.

He said policies contained in Federal Government’s Gas Master Plan have ensured that the country is positioned to maximize the dominance in gas in energy mix internationally.

“If the first 50 years of oil production in Nigeria (1958 – 2008) can be regarded as the oil age, the next 50 years would be the age of gas. Government’s commitment to gas utilization is reflected in the Gas Master Plan and the gas regulations issued in October 2008 which laid the framework for reforms in the gas sector”.

“The reforms are basically three-pronged namely, gas supply domestic obligation, gas pricing framework and gas infrastructure blueprint”.

Dawha explained that the enabling sector policy includes: National Domestic Gas Supply Obligation (DSO) And Pricing Regulation of 2007 which provides the legal basis for gas supply to domestic market and is currently being implemented by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR).
