The federal government will start laying infrastructure for the construction of a standard gauge rail line to run between Lagos and Ibadan next month, Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Fidet Okheria, has announced.
The rail would span 156.65km and would be a double rail line. The project was awarded to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, CCECC.
FG signed a contract last year with CCECC for construction of the Lagos-Ibadan and Calabar-Port Harcourt rail lines in deals worth between $11.917 to $11.117bn.
The whole project, which will be completed in 18 months is expected to cost N458bn. It will coexist with the old narrow gauge rail line and is the first part of the new Lagos-Kano standard gauge line, which was first awarded by the Olusegun Obasanjo administration in 2016 for $8.3bn.
All high-speed rail lines (except those in Russia, Uzbekistan, and Finland) are standard gauge.
