The House of Representatives in Abuja yesterday expressed concern over the pervasiveness of small arms and light weapons in Nigeria, stating that Nigeria now has more weapons than food.

The chairman of the House of Committee on Foreign Affairs, Hon. Nnenna Ukaeje, made this comment while speaking with the Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW). The chairman of the committee on SALW is Ambassador Emmanuel Imohe.

Imohe paid Ukaeje a courtesy visit to seek partnership with the House Committee to accelerate the passage of a draft bill before the house. The bill seeks to make the committee into a commission.

Ukaeje, speaking on the bill, said she was sponsoring it in a bid to ensure effective structure in Nigeria for tackling the problems of the pervasion of illegal small arms and light weapons in the country.

The parliamentarian expressed legitimate fears that these weapons in the wrong hands presented real dangers as the general elections next year draws near.
