The Nigerian House of Representatives has ordered health minister Isaac Adewole to reverse the suspension of Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Usman Yusuf, within a week.

Adewole had removed Yusuf after it was alleged that he procured a N58m SUV without following due process. He'd explained that the suspension was pending the outcome of investigations into the matter.

In addition to reversing the suspension, the House also asked Adewole to halt the re-accreditation of Health Maintenance Organisations, HMOs, pending the outcome of its own investigation of the scheme.

Although Yusuf denied any wrongdoing in the current matter, he has been accused of fraud on several occasions. Recently the House accused him of a “corrupt expenditure of N292 million” which he allegedly spent on health care training “without recourse to any appropriate approving authority.”

It's not expected that the minister would heed the lawmakers and reverse Yusuf's suspension.
