Nigeria - Disaster looms for Nigeria as the country’s broadcasting community is set to participate in the forthcoming digital migration scheduled for June 17, Leadership writes.
In spite of assurances to the contrary by the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC), this country’s participation in the forthcoming digital migration in a matter of weeks by the global broadcasting community remains compromised. The International Telegraphic Union (ITU), of which Nigeria is a member, had adopted Wednesday June 17 2015 as the date when the entire world shall migrate from the analogue mode of broadcast transmission to the digital variant.
This development will leave users of the analogue system, be such broadcast service providers or consumers, unable to transmit or receive signals into or from digital systems. For receivers with analogue systems, they will be required to purchase additional dialogue boxes to convert their equipment to the digital mode.
The implications for Nigeria are both significant and urgent, as the country is among the nations with a huge number of operators and users of analogue equipment and receivers. Most of the broadcasting stations in the country were developed along the analogue mode and conversion will require the deployment of considerable effort that will place a significant strain on the owners, most of whom are government agencies.
