Abubakar Tsav, former commisioner of Police, Lagos state claims that Nigeria needs a President with military background to handle the current crisis in the country.
During an interview with Weekly Trust, Tsav said, "Nigeria is a very difficult country to rule. We need somebody who is very distinct; somebody who can look you in the face and tell you the truth; somebody who is experienced and somebody with a military background. If you just bring in somebody who has no such qualities, that person is not good. Look at the case of President Goodluck Jonathan for instance, he says one thing today and changes tomorrow, but somebody who is experienced, who has military background, once he says something, he will stand by it.
"In situations like what we have today, you don’t do things to please somebody. You do things in the interest of the country. And that is the kind of person we want and you can only find people like these in the military. All American Presidents for instance, had military background and that’s why they don’t have the kind of problems we have in Nigeria.
"People wrongly think that America is succeeding because it is an old democracy, no! We need to bring the right people. But for us to bring somebody who is a puppet as President, who takes advice from everybody, somebody who is controlled by his wife; who takes decisions from his wife; how can such a person rule us effectively? We want somebody with a military background, who can look at his wife in the face and tell her, ‘please keep quiet; this is not your zone’.
When asked if former President Olusegun Obasanjo who had military background was to him an example of a Nigerian president who succeeded in leadership, Tsav said, "Former President Obasanjo was like a bulldozer. Whatever he wanted, he got it, but at the same time, he also caused some of the problems we have in the country today. Obasanjo is not the typical kind of president with a military background that we want. Gen. Abdusalami for instance, was very good; Generals Gowon and Murtala were very good. Gen. Buhari was also very good and likewise Gen. IBB, who was courageous and bold too".
