Nigeria- The Nigerian Senate has turned down President Goodluck Jonathan's request to extend the state of emergency imposed on Adamawa, Yobe and Borno following the violent activities of the Boko Haram sect, DAILY POST reports.

The National Defence Council had met on Monday to review happenings in the Northeast and had decided to extend the emergency rule in the states by another tranche of six months.

President Jonathan had also on the same day forwarded a letter to the National Assembly for approval of the extension.

The Senate, at yesterday’s sitting was divided over the presidential request for the extension, which necessitates today’s decision.

The House of Representatives is also billed to reconvene for a special plenary tomorrow to deliberate on the presidential request for the extension.
