Mr Rafiu Salau, presidential candidate of Alliance for Democracy (AD) in the March 28 election, said Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, may have joked with the threat to Igbos living in Lagos.
Salau stated this at a news conference on Tuesday in Abuja and said that he was inclined to believe that the monarch did not mean what was credited to him in that regard.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the oba allegedly threatened Igbos in Lagos with death in the lagoon if they failed to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in Saturday’s governorship polls in the state.
He was said to have made the threat in his palace while receiving Igbo leaders who visited him during the Easter celebration.
Salau said that every Nigerian had a right to live freely in any part of the country irrespective of political or religious affiliation.
''The Oba must be joking; it is a joke and every Nigerian has the right to stay in any part of the country. The Igbos have the right to live in Lagos; he must be joking; it must be fun.
''Past administrations in Lagos have had Igbo people as commissioners till now. The Oba was a policeman, and I believe he is there to take care of the people as his subjects.
''Many Igbos born in Lagos are now Yorubas; we are all one. What is important is for every candidate to campaign for votes. No one can be forced to vote for anyone; it is your manifesto that will get you votes; the Oba was just joking surely,’’ he said.
He congratulated the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, on his victory, adding that Buhari’s principle of honesty would direct the economy toward development.
''The nation is now blessed with pure democracy that is for the people. Nigeria will now be the role model of Africa, the way China is the pride of Asia. Therefore, the leaders of our party and I are delighted to be associated with the president-elect and other All Progressives Congress leaders,’’ Salau said.
He directed AD supporters at the grassroots to come out en masse and vote for APC candidates on Saturday.
''On behalf of the National Executive Council of the party, I, the National Chairman, hereby direct all the state executive committees to mobilize our supporters and members to vote for the candidates of the APC. In addition, all our grassroots members should campaign for all APC gubernatorial candidates and adopt alliances with APC to produce candidates for every constituency,’’ he said
