On Monday, Chidiebere Ede, a 17-year old boy was allegedly beaten to death by officials of the Enugu State Waste Management Authority (ESWAMA).

Mrs Catherine Ede, the deceased's mother has called on the police to bring the killers to book. Narrating how her son died she said, a group of people, who called themselves staff of ESWAMA, beat up her son to a point of death and dumped him around Cornerstone Bus Stop on Nike Lake Road, Enugu.

"My son left our house at No. 21 Ifenze Street in Abakpa by 5.45 a.m. to dispose of refuse at a T-junction designated as a refuse dump in Abakpa while I was dressing-up to go to the market. When I got to the junction, I saw a group of boys beating my son, dragging him inside their bus, and when I asked them what was wrong, they said he was under arrest and must reach their office.

"As the beating was getting much, I asked my son to follow them to their office while I left to my house to collect money for his bail,’’ Ede said.

She also said that on her way to bail her son, she discovered that her son had been dumped on the road by the group.

"My son was taken to a private hospital for treatment before he gave up the ghost by 3 p.m. My son was writing his Senior School Certificate Examination. He is one of my three children, so, now l am left with a son and a girl. Help me tell ESWAMA and the police to fish out the people that killed my son. God is watching,’’ she lamented.

Ede also said that the corpse of her late son had been deposited in a morgue.

On his side, the doctor who attended to the deceased, Dr Martin Chukwunweike ,said the teenager was brought to the hospital unconscious, with cuts on his head and face; he gave up the ghost during treatment.

In his reaction, the state police spokesman, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, said the police had commenced investigation into the matter. Also reacting, the Managing Director of ESWAMA, Mr Dom Okonkwo, said he had no comments since the police had commenced investigations.
