No fewer than 25,486 out of 45,000 primary school teachers in Kano State are unqualified, the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Alhaji Wada Zakari, said in Kano on Wednesday.

He said that the figure was discovered during a verification exercise recently conducted in the 44 Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs) across the state.

"Arrangements are in top gear to ensure that unqualified primary school teachers in the service of the board undergo mandatory training and retraining programmes to meet the stipulated standard," he said.

"The Special Teachers Up-grading Programme initiated by the board is aimed at upgrading unqualified and under-qualified primary school teachers.’’

According to him, the state government has taken proactive measures to address the situation as it has so far employed 3,000 NCE graduates and posted them to various schools across the state.
