At least one border police officer was killed in southern Afghanistan on Thursday as Pakistani troops attempt to capture Afghan border checkpoints.
"Pakistan security forces attacked an Afghan security checkpoint in Maruf district of Kandahar province at 7 am [0230 GMT], killing one border police,’’ said Zia-ur-Rahman Duran, the provincial police spokesman.
``They started the attack and tried to capture our police checkpoints in the Afghan soil, but faced resistance from the Afghan side,’’ he said.
Some media reports suggested that the gunfire broke out after Afghan forces asked Pakistanis to stop the construction of a new border post, but a Pakistani security official denied building any such checkpoint.
