A Philippine senator handed himself in to the police authorities on Friday in Manila, after an anti-graft court ordered his arrest on charges of large-scale corruption.
Senator Ramon Revilla Jr, was one of three senators accused of receiving millions of dollars in kickbacks from a scam of over 232 million dollars of the congressional priority Development Assistance Fund.
Revilla said before he surrendered to the anti-graft court that it was a nightmare for his family.
"But we have to be strong, I am ready to face the charges because I know I am innocent,"he said.
Herminio Coloma, Presidential Spokesman said government was confident that the truth would soon be out.
"We believe that through a fair and just trial, accountability will be clearly established and in like manner, those that are innocent will be exonerated," he said.
Revilla, who attended mass before surrendering himself was accompanied by family members and hundreds of supporters, and was later detained at the national police headquarters.
His lawyer filed a petition for bail, but the court did not immediately rule on it.
His arraignment has been scheduled for June 26.
