The Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, on Wednesday said that the grandstanding and politicking associated with the fight against terror was increasing the tempo of the activities of terrorists.

Maku said this in Abuja when he briefed State House correspondents on the outcome of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan.

The minister, who said that the FEC condemned the continued bombing, particularly in the Northern part of the country, enjoined politicians to guide their actions and utterances.

``Varieties of opinions among the political class feed into the confidence of terror groups because the objective is to divide public opinion and conveniently penetrate the Nigeria society and destroy it.

``So, we will continue to appeal to politicians to begin to think again and understand that the challenge is not to the advantage of anybody.

``Politics aside, we must safe our country and protect Nigeria first before we can realise our dream within the society,’’ he said.

Maku, specifically called on the 19 Northern governors to go back to the basis, reorganise and sensitise the people from the cradle on how to deal with terrorism.

``This means that today to deal with terror, every of the 19 Northern states must reorganise their people from the smallest unit of the smallest village to hamlet, to wards, to towns, to districts.

``There must be a proper organisation of communities for proper information about movement of people and activities that could lead to destruction of lives and property,’’ he said.

He said the Federal Government had been performing its constitutional responsibility by deploying security agencies when the need arises.

The minister said that the real ground where terrorists were operating was at the local level, therefore, the state government must take proactive measures to stop the terror activities.

Maku also reiterated that the war against terror belonged to all Nigerians and required the cooperation of every citizen.

``The continuing bombing which is absolutely senseless and destructive underlines again the need for all of us in the country to come together and unite to confront the attack of terror on our country.’’

The minister said that FEC commended Jonathan for his efforts to build a regional coalition in the West African sub-region to confront the evil of terrorism.

He said the council encouraged the president to proceed with the efforts being made to consolidate on the coalition of countries to contain the influence and operations of terrorists.

Maku also said that despite the distractions occasioned by the activities of the terror groups, the country was making considerable progress.

He said the Federal Government would use the occasion of the Democracy Day on May 29, to showcase the successes recorded in all sector of the economy.

``In the last four years the administration has done so much for the economy of Nigeria in terms of investment and support for industries.

``We believe that May 29 is an opportunity to showcase what the government had done and so the Office of the SGF is coordinating a programme for the commemoration of the democracy day.

``The programme will showcase the achievements of this administration in the last four years.’’

Maku added that his ministry would also be undertaking sectoral documentaries in all aspects of national development in the last four years. (NAN)
