President Muhamamdu Buhari-led Federal Executive Council yesterday approved a memo for the procurement of 320 operational vehicles for the Nigeria Prisons Service at the cost of N3.5bn.
Interior Minister, Abdulrahama Dambazau, while addressing State House reporters after the meeting said this was aimed at strengthening the criminal justice system and de-congesting the prisons.
He said the procurement was from local manufacturers, assemblies and vendors and the effort was to follow through government’s policy to ensure that most procurement is done locally to provide opportunity for job creation and similar things.
The minister put the current prisoner population at 65,000, about 70 percent of who he said were awaiting trail due to lack of logistics because there are 5,022 courts that on daily basis have to transport prisoners to attend to their cases
