The Ivorian President, Alassane Ouattara, on Thursday while touring the central part of the country hailed its military's operation against armed gangsters and added that his government has planned to adopt a vigorous system to neutralise them on the country’s roads.
“Armed robbers are disturbing in this region, but let us understand that all countries recovering from a conflict are always confronted by this kind of situation," he said.
Ouattara however urged youths, who were ex-combatants and were suspected of involvement in highway robberies, to put down their weapons and get involved in the ``Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration Process (DDR)’’.
“Cote d'Ivoire and its partners such as the European Union (EU), the World Bank and African Development Bank (AfDB) have mobilised resources to reintegrate ex-combatants," he said.
The Ivorian president said several incidents of insecurity which happened in the last few months could be attributed to unemployment.
“Some idle youth have decided to engage in robbery, thinking that is the only way of earning an income," he said.
Ouattara added that the government had initiated a vast job-creation programme for the benefit of youths.
