The Olympic Games can often seem bizarre, It’s not just the sports that have us doing a double take – all kinds of weird and wonderful things can occur.

Rio 2016 appears to have thrown up more strange, unpredictable and eye-raising moments than any other Games in recent memory.

From an oiled flag-bearer to some seriously squeam-inducing injuries, here’s a look at 10 weird moments that we still can’t quite believe happened.

Japanese pole vaulter Hiroki Ogita was left cursing an unfortunate camera angle when footage appeared to show that his penis cost him a place in the final.

The 28-year-old looked all set to clear his opening 5.30m vault when agonisingly the pole was then clipped by what looked to be his own manhood.

Ogita later denied that his genitals were to blame, but by then they’d already become a viral sensation.

2. The dancing weightlifter

Dan Walker’s late-night links at Copacabana Beach on BBC4 have often been just as entertaining as the sports themselves.

As well as a humorous interview with a bride-to-be after a hen party gatecrashed one night’s proceedings, the presenter also had to deal with the background sight of a couple who appeared to be getting just a little too amorous.

4. The green pool

The phrase ‘there’s something in the water’ has never been more apt than at this year’s water polo and diving competitions. Both pools at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre mysteriously changed colour from blue to green a few days into the Games.

Having picked up a gold medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay to become America’s second most decorated swimmer of all time, Ryan Lochte should have headed home to the US a hero.

Instead, he’s being labelled ‘The Ugly American’ and ‘the dumbest bell that ever rang’ by US media.

The 32-year-old said he was robbed at gunpoint at a Rio gas station.

But Brazilian police deny the claims and consequently the New York Post ran a front page featuring Lochte and the words ‘liar, liar, Speedos on fire’.
