An international peace conference to try to end the Syrian civil war is unlikely to go ahead this month, amid widening divisions among rival camps over the starting point of negotiations.
Lakhdar Brahimi, the UN special envoy for Syria, met diplomats yesterday in a fresh push to prepare for the long-awaited Geneva II talks scheduled for late this month. Russian officials, however, said it was clear the conference could not be held as planned, given the failure of all sides to agree on a basis for the talks. "We are still striving to see if we can have the conference before the end of the year," Mr Brahimi said.
One of the biggest hurdles is various divisions among the Syrian opposition. "It is no secret to anyone that the opposition has a lot of problems and is working seriously to overcome these problems to reach a position and to appoint a convincing delegation to represent them in Geneva, and that is what has delayed us a bit," Mr Brahimi said.
