Metro Senate Moves To Establish Baby Care Units in Nigerian Prisons

The Senate yesterday began moves to establish mother and baby units in prisons for the care of pregnant female inmates, nursing mothers and their babies.

Three bills for the repeal and re-enactment of the prisons Act CAP P29 LFN 2004 sponsored by Senator Shaba Lafiagi (APC, Kwara), Senator Babajide Omoworare (APC, Osun) and Senator Oluremi Tinubu (APC, Lagos) scaled through second reading.

Leading the debate, Senator Tinubu “This bill attempts to provide solution by ensuring that prison authorities provide special accommodation to meet prenatal and postnatal needs of pregnant inmates, designate structures as nursery to be staffed by qualified persons where the infants shall be placed when they are not in the care of their mothers.”

Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu who presided over the plenary referred the bills to committees on Interior and Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for further legislative actions.
